How to Keep Strawberries Fresh

Strawberries can last up to a week in the refrigerator if handled correctly. These tips can help you keep strawberries fresh for a couple days longer than you're used to.

Method 1: Lengthening the Shelf Life of Strawberries

1) Look for signs of old strawberries before buying.

2) Throw away moldy strawberries immediately.

3) Don't wash strawberries until just before you use them.

4) Understand how a vinegar wash works.

5) Store in the refrigerator or a cold area.

Method 2: Freezing Strawberries

1) Freeze ripe, firm strawberries.

2) Cut off the inedible green material.

3) Decide how to prepare your strawberries before freezing.

4) Add sugar or sugar syrup (optional).

5) Consider pectin syrup instead (optional).

6) Place the strawberries in freezer-safe containers.

Tips:

  • Strawberries that are mushy, but not fuzzy or moldy, can be used in baking, or pureed and used in salad dressing.
  • Too much contact with zinc or other metals may cause fruit to break down sooner.
